# About This Calculator
Calculating tile for a renovation can be tricky. It's not just about simple square footage; you have to account for cuts, breakages, and pattern matching.
This calculator handles the math for you, converting room dimensions and tile sizes (in inches) into the exact number of boxes or individual tiles you'll need to order.
Wastage Guidelines
- 10% Waste (Standard): For simple grid patterns (straight lay) in rectangular rooms. This covers normal cutting mistakes and minor breakage.
- 15% Waste (Running Bond/Brick): Offset patterns require more cuts at the edges, leading to slightly higher waste.
- 20% Waste (Diagonal): Diagonal layouts look elegant but generate significantly more manufacturer 'cut-offs'.
- Save Some! Always keep a box of extra tiles in the garage. If a tile cracks in 5 years, finding an exact color match batch is nearly impossible.
How To Use
- Measure the **Length** and **Width** of the room (in feet).
- Measure your **Tile Size** (e.g., 12x12 or 6x24 inches).
- Enter a **Wastage Percentage** (Default is 10%, see guide above).
- The result will tell you exactly how many tiles to buy to cover the area safely.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much wastage should I add?+
Standard practice is 10% for simple layouts, and 15-20% for diagonal patterns or complex rooms with many corners.
How do I calculate tiles for a backsplash?+
Measure the length and height of the backsplash area in inches. Multiply to get square inches, then divide by 144 to get square feet. Enter this area into the calculator (e.g. Length = Area Sq Ft, Width = 1).
How many 12x12 tiles do I need for 100 square feet?+
A 12x12 tile is exactly 1 sq ft. You would need 100 tiles, plus 10% wastage, so buy 110 tiles.
Does grout affect the number of tiles?+
Technically yes, wider grout lines mean slightly fewer tiles, but for ordering purposes, it is safest to ignore grout width. This provides a small built-in buffer.
Is Tile Calculator free to use?+
Yes, Tile Calculator on Matheric is completely free to use. We believe in accessible education and utility for everyone.
How accurate is Tile Calculator?+
We use standard mathematical formulas and high-precision computing algorithms to ensure results for Tile Calculator are accurate for academic and professional use.
